Grape Growing Tips
If you like gardening have you considered viticulture, also known as grape growing? Unlike some forms of gardening, grape growing is not as easy as it looks. However, there are lots of great resources that can help you start a little vineyard right in your backyard.
Grapes can be grown from seed, from cuttings or from baby plants. First, consider your geographic region and climate to determine what kind of grape vine to plant. Research which grape varieties are suited to your location. Some do well in the northeast, others require almost year round sun, others are hardy enough to grow most anywhere.
All grape vines require sun, as much as possible, moderate water and loose soil that drains well.
Test the nutrient levels of your soil with a kit and amend the soil as necessary with organic fertilizer or compost.
Grapevines should be spaced six to ten feet apart depending on the variety, and they need to be supported. Stake your vines so they will grow properly and fruit will stay off the ground when it emerges.
The first year, grapevines need to be watered about once per week, maybe more if conditions are very dry.
Do not prune them. By allowing them to grow wild they will become to strong, sturdy plants. After the first year pruning can begin. The best time to prune is in the winter during the dormant season.
Plant your vines in early spring and prune in the winter. The more you prune, the more abundant your fruit harvest will be. It takes at least one year before fruit appears on grapevines so be patient.
Knowing when to harvest your grapes is important. The only true way to know is to taste them. When they pass the taste test, you can harvest your grapes and use them for their intended purpose.
